Finding Joy In Hard Times

Wow! What a year 2020 turned out to be: Coronavirus, fires, crashes, locust swarms, earthquakes, brutality, riots, etc. I’m pretty sure the list goes on…

I will be remiss if I was to keep silent on all that has transpired over the past week concerning George Floyd and Black Lives Matter.

I’m going to be very straightforward here. Although I never knew my father, I was told by my mother (who’s Chinese) that my father was an African American soldier. I was a war baby in the Vietnam War.

I had always had an identity issue growing up before I came to Christ.
I’m not going to lie people can be very prejudiced if not plain racist, but fortunately for me, I do not let my race or have anyone else define who I am because of my race.

The Problem

I don’t think the problem is racism. I think the real problem stems from our opposing values system. People in general (no matter what their race is) are messed up and that’s why we need Jesus in our lives.

People who don’t have God in their lives will want to live by their own idealism and rules instead of by God’s (The 10 Commandments), and there lies the problem.

There are those who’ll wear their oppression as a badge of honor and will not lay down their burdens but use it as an excuse to fuel their own anger and hatred towards their oppressors.

Then there are those that have a sense of obligation to be our “white savior”, to try to lighten the burdens of those who experience racism at first hand by the hands of those doing the oppressing.

The Solution

I wish there was an easy solution, but there isn’t. As long as God permits free will, people will continue to be the problem and at best try to come up with their own solution.

Our lives are basically a constant fluctuation of emotional highs and lows. While most of our lives are spent in the fairly mundane state of emotional normalcy, it’s also often broken up by the valleys when nothing seems to go right.

Life is far less about what happens to you than it is how you react to it. You are in charge of how you feel. Don’t fall into the routine of letting happiness get to your head and failure to your heart. Here’s a cool video I found to remind us of this.

“God will judge us not according to how much we endured, but how much we could love.”―Richard Wurmbrand
Richard Wurmbrand – The Torchlighters

“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who abuse you.” (Luke 6:27–28)

So, how do we find any joy in the midst of those tragedies when all hell seems to break loose? For me, it’s Jesus and working from home!
