Are You Tired of Living Without Purpose or Accountability?
Being Accountable Is A Choice, Start Living a Life of Purpose!
Most people follow one of two paths in life. The first and most common one is the care-free life, one without accountability. This was me. Although I was a responsible person, I had a fear of commitment which prevented me from being accountable not only to myself but to God and others.
The other is a path of confusion, worry, and regret. It’s the path without purpose, without meaning, without direction, more like a confusing maze that makes your head spin and never leads to anywhere you want to go, let alone be fulfilling.
I know both these paths all too well because I lived them for the first thirty years of my life. I was carefree and yet confused at the same time. Care-free because I didn’t hold myself accountable and confused because my life felt meaningless. I didn’t have a clue what I was meant for or to do in life. I was tossed like a wave in the ocean.
My life was a series of random experiences with an emptiness in the middle. I always felt like I was getting ready to live, but could never figure out how to actually “step up to the plate” so to speak due to my commitment issues. That is until I gave my life to Jesus Christ. That’s when it finally all clicked for me. God needs me to be accountable to Him, myself, and others.
The age of accountability refers to the time in a person’s life when he or she is capable of making a decision whether to trust Jesus Christ for salvation and to start living accordingly. And so the battle begins…Being accountable is more than just some self-will discipline, it’s also a type of spiritual warfare.
Being accountable is important. Whether it is politics, sports, education, or personal habits, human relationships depend on us being accountable. But more importantly, what does the Bible have to say about accountability? Accountability in the church should be normal practice as we help one another fight against sin and pursue holiness. This battle against temptation affects every person since temptations are “common to man” (1 Corinthians 10:13) and “it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come” (Matthew 18:7).
In the face of such temptation, many Christians seek out an “accountability partner” to pray with and help share the burdens that come with doing spiritual warfare. It is good to have a brother or sister in Christ, someone we can count on when we are facing temptations. King David was alone the evening that Satan tempted him into adultery with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11). The Bible tells us we fight a war not of the flesh but of the spirit, against powers and spiritual forces who threaten us (Ephesians 6:12).
The whole accountability thing was really starting to get the best of me, mainly because I didn’t recognize it as spiritual warfare at the time. I struggled so much that I ended up getting really depressed. There was even talk of divorce, my whole world was about to come crashing down on me.
It's Time To Turn Things Around
Quite honestly, I was tired of not being taken seriously by people whom I loved and who loved me, due to my own lack of personal accountability. I needed to “man up” and do it quickly!
I knew there had to be a better way and surely, I wasn’t the only one struggling with this whole accountability thing. So, I dedicated myself to getting help. I enrolled myself in a few Christian college courses and found myself a mentor.
My mentor/coach helped me go through a 5 step process which ultimately helped me to face the demons I was battling spiritually. The time had finally come for me “to be the head and not the tail“.
- Step One: Define my relationship with God
- Step Two: Identify my dreams or purpose
- Step Three: Liberation from hindrances (limiting beliefs)
- Step Four: Develop a plan
- Step Five: Take Action!
How much of your success would you say is up to you—your choices, your actions, your behaviors—versus outside conditions? My coach taught me there’s nothing in life that can be carried out to the fullest without accountability! It is the one ingredient to your process that glues all the steps together in order to make a new you come to fruition. Once I realize this, I was on my way to a better me.
I’ve been a stay-at-home dad since 2008 and know all the struggles and stigma that goes with it. For years, I didn’t just struggle with accountability issues but just taking care of myself in other areas as well. That’s why I decided to create an 8-week signature coaching program called “Self-Care for Stay-at-Home Dads“.
We can become “accountable by choice”! Having a life coach not only helped me, but it inspired me to become a certified and licensed Life Coach Minister. My sole mission now is to help others to gain back control of their lives by using my spiritual gifts as a life coach.
But why self-care? According to the World Health Organization, burnout is real and has become a clinical syndrome. The things we choose to do every day have begun to affect our mental, physical, and overall well-being but many of us are too busy to even notice it until it’s too late.
Effective self-care practice is multi-dimensional – it covers physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, personal, and professional areas of our lives, it’s no wonder that nurturing all these aspects of ourselves would create intention, focus, and meaning for us, as well as improve our relationships with not only ourselves and others, but with our Creator as well. You see, true accountability is about helping others be the best version of themselves. It is about helping them make their biggest and best contributions, today and in the future.
